Search for a hidden camera app and you will find dozens of listings that read like each other. This one is written by the people behind one of them, which you should factor in — so we have tried to earn the read by being specific about what each app does, honest about what ours does not, and clear about the limits iOS imposes on every app in the category equally.

Start here: what none of them can do

Before any comparison, four things are true of every third-party iPhone camera app. If a listing implies otherwise, that alone tells you something.

1. None can record with the app in the background. iOS suspends camera access the moment an app leaves the foreground. There is no exception, no entitlement to request, no workaround. Apps that appear to do this are keeping themselves in the foreground with the screen disguised.
2. None can hide the green recording indicator. It is drawn by the system above everything an app can render. We wrote about why the green dot exists at length.
3. None can silence the shutter in every region. In Japan, South Korea and a few others, iOS enforces a shutter sound at system level.
4. None can record with the screen genuinely off. “Screen off” in this category always means “screen showing something other than a camera”.

Everything below is about how apps differ within those limits.

What actually differentiates these apps

Three things, and the third is the one most comparisons skip:

What the screen shows while recording. The viewfinder is the giveaway, and how convincingly an app replaces it decides whether you get noticed.

Where the footage lands. In your camera roll, where it syncs to iCloud and sits in the first place anyone looks — or in a locked gallery inside the app.

Which side of the paywall the camera is on. This is the big one. Every app here is free to download. What separates them is what “free” actually gets you — and in this category, the camera itself is often the thing you have to buy.

The apps

The reason for the range is situational: a black screen vanishes in a dark room and stands out in a lit one, where a web page is completely unremarkable.

• A private gallery — and when it fills, you can unlock more space by watching an ad rather than paying

That is a deliberate line, not an oversight. We charge heavy users and people who want to customise — unlimited gallery storage, the advanced masks, widget customisation, no ads. We do not charge you to record in 4K, and we do not charge you to use your Apple Watch.

Where it is weak: no motion detection at all, so it is the wrong tool for leaving a phone recording unattended. And the advanced masks are a subscription rather than a one-time purchase.

Discreet — fine if the black screen is genuinely all you need

One disguise: a black screen. It does that well, and its free tier covers the black screen and a private gallery, so you can try it.

What costs money is the camera. 4K, 60fps, high-quality stills, slow motion and Apple Watch support are all on the paid tier — US$9.99 once, a lifetime unlock with no subscription.

Ten dollars is not much, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise. But look at what it buys: those five things are exactly the ones Eclipse gives away for nothing. The fair way to read that price is not “Discreet is cheap”, it is “Discreet charges for the part we do not charge for at all.”

So the honest recommendation: if you want cheap and simple, and a black screen in a dark room is all you are after, Discreet is a reasonable pick. One mode, nothing to choose between. Just know that every feature it charges for is one Eclipse gives you for nothing — and that a black screen is the conspicuous choice in a lit room, which is where a disguise has to work hardest.

Camera Eye (former Easy Calc) — generous, clever, and standing still

Credit where it is due: this is the strongest free tier in the category apart from ours. Screen masks, a private gallery, 60fps, high-quality stills, 4K and slow motion — all free. It also has two disguise tricks Eclipse does not: a decoy PIN that opens a dummy gallery instead of your real one, and a fake app icon.

What it charges for is motion detection and lifting the caps on recording length and storage — nothing else. You can pay monthly, yearly, or once for a lifetime unlock. An unattended phone that records when something moves is worth paying for, and it is something Eclipse does not offer at any price.

The catch is momentum. It has been on the App Store since 2011 and is still updated for new iOS versions, but its release notes have described compatibility fixes rather than new features since January 2020. Six years is a long time in a category where iOS changes what is possible every autumn. It holds 3.9 stars from 112 ratings.
